Rates

Frequently, writing projects are negotiated on a case by case basis, with the client paying a per-word fee, a per-page fee, or a flat fee for the project.

Apart from these, however, my base rate for writing ranges between $30 and $55 per hour, depending on the field. This rate is not universally applicable; different jobs may require different pay scales.

Rush jobs are charged extra. Double the rate is customary, although depending on the deadline this may be negotiated.

Revisions: When negotiating a contract, a specified number of revisions will be included at an agreed rate, dependent upon the size of the work and the level of editing required. The client may ask for further revisions, but each revision will be charged at an hourly rate appropriate to the project and the deadline. Please note that due to its ongoing evolving nature, developmental editing rarely has a specific number of revisions defined in the contract.

Expenses: Should a project require specific supplies, services such as copying, research, or travel, associated costs will be billed to the client unless other arrangements are made.

Please note: If a payment is missed, work will be suspended on the project until such time as payment is rendered. Overdue payment may also be subject to a late fee.


Contracts

In general, the contract I offer will specify the following:

  • What the project is
  • The size of the project
  • A detailed description of the services being applied to the project
  • The projected term of the agreement
  • The mutually agreed upon deadline for the work
  • The agreed payment option, including rates and payment dates, and specified penalties for late or non-payment
  • The number of revisions included (if applicable)
  • Which party is responsible for extra associated costs such as travel, specific supplies, and services such as copying or mailing, and any other project-associated fees
  • A cancellation clause
  • A confidentiality clause

Writing Experience

In the past I have:

  • Published three non-fiction books as of December 2007
  • Edited full-length non-fiction books, medical documents, communication plans, magazine sections, collections of short fiction, novels, and anthologies
  • Written newsletters, text for Web pages, articles, and features on a variety of topics including reviews, literary analysis, and criticism, product copy for niche markets, short fiction, novels, and educational and training materials
  • Developed and presented workshops and lectures on specialized topics.
  • Worked within the book industry for over fourteen years
